Poverty first, moon next
The humongous marginal difference between poverty and technological development has been a trivial issue of debate. With the massive success of Chandrayaan 3 by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the debate sparked, why the country where nutrition security is less than 60% is spending this huge amount to a space mission?
India has achieved food security so far but nutrition security is yet to be achieved. As per WHO, even in 2023, 74% of the Indian people doesn't have access to nutritional food. It maybe because rising demand of junk food, consuming leftovers , inflation, increase in exports parallely to lesser production due to lack of resources, disasters, etc. As a negative repercussions, every 5th citizen is obese or malnourished. We can see extensive food inflation situation in India, the root cause is irregular rainfalls in hilly areas and planes. Due to irregularities in rainfall, we came through sudden food inflation, rise in Consumer Price Index (CPI), as a result, curbs on rice and tomatoes exports were implemented.
But, should these statistics refrain India from technological development? The answer is no. If we look over recent technological advancements, it has eventually boosted employment opportunities, uplifting interests of youth in space and scientific researches. Chandrayaan 3 lander, Vikram, is landed on the south pole of the moon making India first ever nation to land on dark side of the moon. As Chandrayaan 3 gross budget was 614 crores that is less than even total budget of the movie Adipurush (634 crores). ISRO strive to process all its space missions budgeted to economy, be it chandrayaan 2, mars mission or anything. On the other hand, technological development is extensively crucial to stand nation at global level, ultimately improving our global image. It is crucial for our economy to sustain. Any space mission are capable of exploring infinite possibilities roaming in the space that could possibly support life. For instance, Pragyan rover of Chandrayaan 3 found traces of oxygen, lithium, manganese, titanium on moon and is currently searching of hydrogen.
Poverty is a major issue but technological development cannot be negotiated at the cost of Nation's economy. These technologies will ultimately bring employment and growth opportunities, literacy opportunities and many more that will eventually curb poverty at national level. All we need to do is make these technologies inclusive to all. Schemes should be made so that these technologies reaches out to everyone equally.
