Previously, Android users had to rely on the web version, tv.apple.com, to access Apple TV or the MLS Season Pass, which was quite cumbersome. A native app will be a game changer, providing a more seamless experience and enabling users to download content for offline viewing.
The Apple TV app is brimming with content, featuring Apple TV+ originals, other Apple TV channels, and a store for purchasing or renting movies and shows. It also includes Apple’s expanding sports content, like Friday Night Baseball and the MLS Season Pass.
This step aligns the Apple TV app with Apple Music, another key Apple service. Apple Music was initially launched exclusively on iOS in 2015 but became available on Android later that year. The Apple TV app, which debuted in 2019, has been confined to iPhones until now.
Apple has been broadening the availability of the Apple TV app across various platforms beyond mobile devices to attract more viewers to Apple TV+. The app is already accessible on Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, PlayStation, Xbox, Xfinity cable boxes, and more. Last year, Apple even introduced a native Windows desktop app.
Finally, Android users can rejoice as Apple expands access to the Apple TV app. This change will facilitate easier sign-ups and enjoyment of Apple TV+ and other services for non-iPhone users. However, the release timeline for the Android version remains uncertain. If Apple has only recently begun development, it may take a while before the app becomes available.
